The first step in the logo design project is the development of the "Creative Brief". The Creative Brief is prepared using information provided by the client as well as further market research to fill in any gaps regarding the competition and target audience to aid the logo design process. It is an invaluable tool in assuring that the logo design project stays on track, and is executed before any work is done. It will also be referred to, expanded and refined throughout the logo development process.

There are several types of balance:
Symmetrical Logos
If you draw a line down the center of your design, you'll find the exact same elements on either side of that line. Logo Designs using symmetrical balance tend to have a formal, traditional look to them.
Asymmetrical Logos
If you compare two sides of a logo design, the objects are different on each side of the logo.
Radial
The objects in your logo design radiate out from a central point in the logo.
